Which State has the Most Truck Accidents?

Every year around the country, thousands of truck accidents occur. However, they do happen in some states more commonly than in others. This is often due to the fact that states with higher rates of truck accidents have busy international ports that receive and ship products, or they are transportation hubs. So, what state has the most trucking accidents overall, and which have the highest incidence of fatal truck accidents? Our San Antonio truck accident lawyer explains more below.
What State has the Highest Amount of Truck Accidents?
It may not surprise residents of the Lone Star State to learn that Texas once led the country in the number of trucking accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 622 commercial truck accidents in Texas in 2020.
Surprisingly, the amount of truck accidents in Texas did not drop significantly in 2022. In fact, while the state no longer ranks in the top three for the number of truck accidents, the number of incidents did increase. In 2022, there were 782 total truck accidents in Texas.
North Dakota had the highest percentage of large trucks involved in accidents, at 23 percent in 2022. Wyoming was second at 21 percent, with Iowa coming in third at 16 percent.
Which State has the Most Fatal Truck Accidents?
Although Texas no longer takes the top spot for the number of truck accidents, the state did have the most number of fatal truck accidents in 2022. That year, there were 810 deaths due to trucking accidents in the Lone Star State. California had the second-highest amount of deaths with 436 fatalities in the same year. With 368 deaths, Florida ranked third for trucking accident fatalities.
The states with the fewest number of truck accident fatalities were District of Columbia with just three fatalities, Rhode Island with five deaths, and Hawaii with six deaths.
Who Suffers the Most Injuries During Truck Accidents?
According to the NSC, it is the occupants of smaller vehicles that are more likely to suffer injuries during a truck accident. In fact, 70 percent of accident victims were occupants of other vehicles. Only 18 percent of truck drivers sustained injuries during crashes. Additionally, 11 percent of accident victims were non-occupants, such as pedestrians.
These statistics remain very similar in Texas. Here, 68 percent of truck accident victims were occupants of smaller vehicles while the number of truck drivers injured increased to 21 percent. Only 10 percent of accident victims were non-occupants.
