What Highways Pose the Highest Risk for Truck Accidents in Texas?
Texas has a vast highway network and every year, more than $1.2 billion tons of freight are moved on them. Not only are the highways in Texas some of the busiest in the country, but they are also some of the deadliest. It is important that all motorists in The Lone Star state are aware of the highways that pose the highest risk, so they can remain alert to the dangers and exercise caution while on these roadways so everyone remains safe. So, what highways are the highest risk for truck accidents in Texas? Below, our San Antonio 18-wheeler accident lawyer explains further.
I-10
In Texas, Interstate 10 runs from Anthony and El Paso and cuts through San Antonio and Houston before it continues into Louisiana. I-10 is a major highway and so, it may come as no surprise that it is one of the deadliest highways in the entire country. It also connects San Antonio, Houston, and El Paso.
Perhaps what may be surprising is that on I-10 in particular, drunk driving is a real problem. While approximately 29 percent of all fatal accidents on the country’s highways were attributed to drunk driving, impaired driving was to blame for 44 percent of all fatal crashes on I-10. This is higher than drunk driving rates on I-10 in other states, such as New Mexico, Florida, Alabama, and Arizona.
I-35
I-35 runs north-south in Texas and it is one of the biggest and most important highways in the state. This highway runs through Waco, Austin, and San Antonio. While the area of I-35 in Austin sees the highest fatality rates, there are many stretches in Dallas and San Antonio that also pose great risks to motorists. Like Interstate 10, drunk driving is also a real problem on I-35, as well. Of all the fatal car accidents on I-35, 39 percent of them were due to drunk driving. That far surpasses the national average of 28 percent on highways in the country.
I-45
I-45 does not run through San Antonio but given that it has been dubbed as America’s deadliest highway, it is worth mentioning. In just two years, between 2018 and 2020, there were 45 fatal accidents on the stretch of I-45 running between Houston and Harris County. Overall, this highway had 56.5 fatalities for every 100 miles in 2020.
