What State Has the Most Truck Accidents?
Thousands of truck accidents happen each year throughout the United States, but some states have a higher rate of these crashes than others. Truck accidents are much more likely to happen in states that have international ports where goods are shipped and received, or they are busy transportation hubs. If you live in Texas, or are visiting the Lone Star State, you are more likely to be hurt in a crash, as Texas consistently has a higher number of truck accidents than any other state in the country. Below, our San Antonio truck accident attorney explains more.
Texas Has the Most Truck Accidents
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 622 truck accidents in Texas in 2020. California was a distant second with nearly half of the truck accidents, for a total of 384. Florida had the third-largest number of truck accidents in the same year, with 351. Just because truck accidents are more common in the state, it does not mean you do not have rights if you have been injured. It is always important to speak to an attorney who can help you protect those rights.
Who is Most at Risk During a Truck Accident?
Every year, approximately 5,000 people lose their lives in trucking accidents. Of the 4,965 people who were killed in truck accidents in 2020, the victims were as follows:
- 71 percent were occupants of other vehicles,
- 17 percent were truck drivers, and
- 13 percent of non-occupants.
Clearly, occupants of smaller vehicles are far more likely to lose their lives in a truck accident compared to truck drivers and non-occupants. Non-occupants refer to pedestrians and cyclists. While these individuals are far more likely to suffer serious injuries, including wrongful death, than other motorists on the road, they are not involved in truck accidents as often as other vehicles and so, the number of victims is significantly smaller.
What State Has the Most Fatal Truck Accidents?
While it is true that Texas has the highest number of truck accidents overall, the state does not hold the record for the most fatal crashes involving trucks. Wyoming had the most fatal truck accidents with 19 percent of all accidents happening in the Equality State. Nebraska and Idaho followed behind Wyoming, with 16 percent of fatal truck accidents each, according to the National Safety Council.
